Tudor Parfitt (born 10 October ) is a British historian, writer, broadcaster, traveller and adventurer. He specialises in the study of Jewish communities around the world, particularly in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Some of these communities have been recognised only since the late 20th century as having ancient Jewish origins.

Judaism is an ancient monotheistic religion, with the Torah as its foundational text (part of the larger text known as the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible), and supplemental oral tradition represented by later texts such as the Midrash and the Talmud.   The book is premised on the idea that there is such a thing as Judaism—a single religion with a history that can be told as a single story (an idea that may seem like common sense to many general readers, but one that some scholars of Jewish studies would dispute).
